The College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the National Security Agency, organized an awareness workshop titled “Drugs and Psychoactive Substances: Their Impact on the Individual, Family, and Society,” attended by a number of faculty members and students.
The workshop aimed to shed light on the health, social, and security risks posed by drug abuse, highlighting its negative effects on family stability and social cohesion, while also raising youth awareness about the dangers of falling into addiction.
A specialist lecturer from the National Security Agency led the session, addressing the types of prevalent drugs and psychoactive substances, methods of promotion, and tactics used to target vulnerable groups—particularly young people.
The lecture also covered the physical, psychological, and social consequences of drug use, which contribute to family breakdown, increased crime rates, reduced productivity, and threats to societal security and stability.
Additionally, the speaker reviewed the security efforts undertaken to combat this phenomenon, including tracking networks involved in illegal promotion and trafficking, and intensifying preventive and awareness campaigns in cooperation with educational institutions.
The workshop witnessed strong engagement from attendees, with questions and discussions reflecting growing awareness of the seriousness of drug abuse and its multifaceted impact.
This activity contributes to the achievement of Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
