In celebration of World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, the College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad organized an awareness event under the theme “Mental Well-being: A Path to Creativity and Giving.” The event was held with the contribution of the college’s Human Rights Unit, emphasizing the importance of promoting societal awareness of mental health and its vital role in shaping a balanced individual and a healthy society.
In a speech delivered on the occasion, the college administration affirmed that attention to mental health is a fundamental pillar in supporting students, faculty, and administrative staff. It noted that mental well-being is no less important than physical health; rather, it complements it within an integrated system that enhances productivity and fosters balance between academic and social life.
The college further explained that commemorating this day aligns with the directives of the World Health Organization, which asserts that “there is no health without mental health.” It stressed the need to break the silence surrounding mental disorders and to promote a culture of understanding and support within the university community, aiming to create a safe environment that encourages dialogue and openness.
This event is part of a series of awareness initiatives adopted by the college as part of its social responsibility, in line with Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, which seeks to guarantee healthy lifestyles and enhance both mental and physical well-being for all individuals.
Through this initiative, the College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad, via its Human Rights Unit, continues to foster a culture of mental health care as a fundamental pathway toward sustainable human development and the creation of a university environment that supports creativity, encourages giving, and promotes academic excellence.
