The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Media, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop entitled “Combating Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism and Hate Speech”, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Ali Al-Shujairi.
The workshop addressed the dangers of violent extremism and its impact on the security and stability of societies, emphasizing the pivotal role of media in countering hate speech and confronting extremist ideologies by promoting a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and intellectual openness.
It also discussed media and educational strategies that contribute to correcting misconceptions propagated by extremist groups and support the development of societal awareness based on moderation and acceptance of others.
The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations calling for intensified awareness campaigns within educational and media institutions to confront extremism, the adoption of positive and responsible media discourse, and the empowerment of youth to actively participate in programs that promote peaceful coexistence and reject violence.
This workshop is part of a series of scientific and educational activities organized by the College of Media at the University of Baghdad, aimed at raising awareness of the media’s role in peacebuilding and fostering a culture of tolerance within society.
It contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16, which advocates for peace, justice, and strong institutions.
