The Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad organized an awareness workshop titled “The Dangers of Human Trafficking in Times of Authoritarian Regimes,” as part of the National Strategic Plan to Combat Human Trafficking and in an effort to promote human rights awareness among students and academic staff.
The workshop was led by Dr. Israa Abdul Ali Kazem, Head of the Unit, and Dr. Mohammed Khalil Ahmed, Liaison Member. It addressed key concepts related to the crime of human trafficking and examined how authoritarian regimes exacerbate this phenomenon by undermining the rule of law and exploiting vulnerable groups.
The session also explored contributing factors to the spread of human trafficking, its social and humanitarian consequences, and reviewed the international legal framework and relevant national legislation, particularly the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.
The workshop witnessed active student participation, emphasizing the importance of raising public awareness and empowering academic institutions to confront such violations through education, advocacy, and collaboration with relevant entities.
In conclusion, several key recommendations were highlighted, including strengthening judicial oversight, enhancing the efficiency of security agencies, promoting international cooperation, and involving civil society organizations in efforts to combat human trafficking.
This workshop contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16, which advocates for peace, justice, and strong institutions.
