The College of Pharmacy participated in the Fifteenth International Graduate Studies Conference of the Midwest in America, sponsored by the University of Toledo. This participation involved delivering a seminar on the master’s research conducted by the student, Russl Mohammed Hassan Ali, in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The lecture was titled: “Thiadiazole Derivatives as Possible Histone Deacetylase Enzyme Inhibitors.”
The study aimed to design new HDAC inhibitors containing thiadiazole moiety. This study involved the design and computational analysis of a series of thiadiazole derivatives using the Maestro program. Compounds with good docking scores included compounds 6a, 6b, and 6c compared to the FDA-approved vorinostat. Compounds 6a, 6b, and 6c underwent organic synthesis using conventional chemical reactions, and the intermediate and final products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The activity of the compounds against cancer cells was evaluated using MTT analysis, indicating that the IC50 for compound 6b was 0.66 μM, whereas the IC50 for vorinostat was 1.48 μM.
