Prof. Dr. Ali Hussein Abbar, a Professor in the Department of Biochemical Engineering, at Al-Khwarizmi College of Engineering, University of Baghdad has obtained a patent jointly with the researcher Zahraa Ali Kazem, to enable them to design an innovative bio-electrochemical reactor with a rotating cylindrical cathode electrode with a fixed grating to remove nickel from waste water.
The patent uses a new type of bioelectrochemical reactor to remove the heavy metals, where removal rates of up to 99% of the primary metal concentration were obtained with low energy consumption compared to the traditional ways using activated slag has been getting from the heavy water treatment in the second Karkh, as well as the low economic cost of the reactor was characterized by having a high quality surface area that enables it to remove different heavy metals.
