The Department of Hebrew Language at the College of Languages has witnessed the discussion of the master’s thesis entitled (The linguistic structure of the contemporary Hebrew novel: Astonishment by Aharon Appelfeld as a model) that was submitted by the researcher Abdul Rahman Farhan Youssef. This study aims to shed light on the linguistic structure of the novel “Astonishment” through analyzing the characteristics of its structure according to the statistical analytical method since the linguistic structure is the main pillar of a literary work in its various forms, whether poetry or prose, so it forms the backbone of any work.
This researcher provided a general linguistic description of morphological, grammatical and semantic aspects, in addition to analyzing the construction of definite and indefinite nouns, singular or plural, as well as the structure of the verb in terms of weight and temporal significance. From a grammatical point of view, this research discusses the grammatical structure in order to identify the grammatical structures such as: simple and complex sentences, while from the semantic and rhetorical points of view, this study provided a semantic analysis of the most important semantic phenomena and rhetorical methods. The researcher concluded that the morphological structure of the novel “Astonishment” is an easy and clear structure where the writer has succeeded in choosing words that enable him to convey his ideas to the reader easily, also maintaining the usual sentence order in Hebrew as the most commonly used and in an interesting style dominated by the metaphorical character.
