The Department of Geography, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Education for Women, has organized a scientific workshop entitled “Smart Transport Requirements and the Possibility of its Application in Iraq”, where the lectures were delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Samah Sabah Alwan along with a number of professors. The workshop aimed to discuss the role played by the intelligent transportation system in various areas of life, which is considered by many specialists as the main engine of economic growth, as it plays the role of the locomotive that drives activity in other sectors towards recovery at the local and regional levels, and full keenness to engage in the knowledge society and the world of communication and information networks so as to promote the uses of communication technologies in various fields on the one hand and improving the quality of services provided to citizens on the other hand within the framework of trends in the digital world.

The lecturers stated that the idea of smart transport has emerged as one of the projects aimed to integrate modern communications and information technology into existing transport management systems, and is also defined as the use of computer, electronics and communications technologies in the transport service to meet many of the challenges facing us in transportation such as improving levels of safety, productivity and movement. The professors suggested many recommendations, the most important of which is the need to apply the intelligent transportation system at all provinces of Iraq, due to the need for all of Iraq’s roads for these systems, which will significantly reduce the related problems such as traffic accidents, congestion and delays in movement and the need to prepare engineering cadres trained in managing intelligent transport systems and allocating large sums of money to cover all the required costs for such a system, including sensors, cameras and others.
