The Institute of Genetic Engineering held a workshop entitled “SNB Resistance Winter in Winter Wheat” which was presided over by the Director of the Scientific Affairs Department at the institute, Assist. Prof. Dr. Qais Qasim Ghaima, and was delivered by Dr. Rami Ali al-Tamimi, who has presented a research paper extracted from his doctoral thesis aimed to provide a brief explanation of how to use the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) technology to identify the gene responsible for the resistance of winter wheat to SNB fungus and to find genetic variants correlated with a trait or a disease.

During the workshop, a brief explanation was given on how to use the mentioned technique and the Tassal software, in addition to how to obtain sequencing for (247) species and methods of measuring and determining the infestation of this fungus in winter wheat. The workshop identified sources of winter wheat resistant to SNB fungi, as well as QTL resistant to SNB and identification of markers associated with SNB resistance. The researcher confirmed that these markers can be used to improve SNB resistance to winter wheat as well as the validity of three QTLs, which have been used in various studies and that is important for reproduction purposes.
