Prof. Dr. Abbas Abdul Majeed Allawi, the head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the College of Engineering has participated in the International Conference on Construction Engineering: Towards More Sustainable Structures (ICE 2022) as a keynote speaker aimed to bring together researchers and experts in the field of construction engineering from international universities, which was held in Damascus, Syria for the period from 28 to 30 November 2022 at the invitation of the Higher Institute for Earthquake Studies & Research (HIESR) at the Damascus University.

Dr. Abbas Abdul Majeed has delivered the opening lecture as the keynote speaker entitled: (Sustainability in Bridges: Reconstruction of Destroyed Bridges in Iraq: A Special Review), in which he talked about the sustainability methods used in the structural structures of bridges and the latest techniques of materials adopted and reviewed Iraq’s experience in the reconstruction of bridges destroyed due to military actions and terrorism, in addition to a panel discussion on the reinforced concrete (RC).

The conference was characterized by the presence of researchers from the universities of the United States of America, Britain, India, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Romania, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Serbia, Iran, Tunisia, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, and the presence of representatives of all Syrian universities specialized in the fields of construction, reinforced concrete, earthquakes, materials, project management, soil and water resources. The main objective of the conference is to present innovative research and cutting-edge technologies for the optimal use of available resources and energy ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of construction while preserving cultural and architectural heritage and protecting the environment.
