The Department of Islamic Creed at the College of Islamic Sciences has organized a workshop on the purposes of Sharia related to divorce and reluctance to marry, presented by Prof. Dr. Ammar Kamel Al-Khatib and Dr. Ahmed Sabah. The workshop aimed to identify the main purposes of marriage, which are to achieve absolute slavery to God, Lord of the Worlds, and to achieve stillness and heart tranquility, since that marriage grows the spirit of affection and love between spouses as well as developing proposed solutions to address the phenomenon of divorce.
The workshop included a presentation of the judicial statistics of the many divorce cases spread among young people in recent times in Iraq, which was estimated at approximately more than 4500 divorce cases in the previous September, most of which were under eighteen, especially in Basra, followed by Baghdad, Mosul, Anbar and Diyala. He then discussed the reasons for divorce and ways to treat such phenomena that may be a result of poor financial condition, high dowry, many marriage requirements that are among the most important reasons for the reluctance of young people to marry, stressing on the need for conducting a series of awareness campaigns urging not to take the high dowry from men.
