In conjunction with the spread of Mucormycosis, the Branch of Microbiology at the college of veterinary medicine has organized a virtual lecture entitled “Mucormycosis Disease” in collaboration with the continuing education unit and Ibn Sina unit for e-learning delivered by the Assist. lecturer Fadwa Abdul Razzaq Jamil with the aim to identify this serious rare fungal infection, also known as black fungus. The lecturer stated that Mucormycosis is one kind of Zycomycetes fungi known as Mucor microbial genus found in nature for thousands of years and that spreads rapidly among people with low immunity and who have infected by breathing or by eating contaminated foods.

The lecturer also identified the most important clinical symptoms such as nasal sinuses, swollen eyelid that spreads to the brain and other organs, adding that it causes abortion and inflammation of the placenta in animals. He said that this disease is not specific to an age group but affects all ages, most notably those who suffer from diabetics, and it is not contagious among humans or animals, i.e, it is not an epidemic but happens as a result of complications of drug treatments especially among Coronavirus patients who take immunosuppressant medications such as Cortisone usually regarded as a catalyst for its significant growth. At last, the lecturer Fadwa Abdul Razzaq discussed some diagnosis and treatment methods of this disease, most notably Amphotericin B which is an effective antifungal medication used for serious fungal infections.
