Assist. Prof. Dr. Jinan Abdul Amir Abbas, a faculty member from the department of geography at the college of education for women has participated in the 13th session of the (Virtual International Conference for the Applications of Geographic Information Systems and Geo-space) with a research paper entitled (Environmental degradation of some lands of the Iraqi alluvial plain).

In this study, the researcher used the geographic information system, satellite images and spectral evidence techniques to determine the degree of the physical, chemical and biological deterioration of some selected areas from the outskirts and southern Baghdad, such as the Unity Project. The results of the study indicated the predominance of chemical deterioration, such as an increase in salinity rates with a biological deterioration represented by a lack of vegetation cover for the period (1997 – 2020), as well as a severe drop in the values of organic matter with a significant impact on the poor quality of water used for irrigation. It also showed that the human factor has an important role in this deterioration through mismanagement of environmental resources like soil, water and other natural factors.
