The department of chemistry, in cooperation with Ibn Sina unit for e-learning and the continuing education unit at the college of science organized a virtual scientific lecture entitled “The chemistry of cigarettes” given by the Lecturer Jalal Nasser with the participation of a number of students and specialists in medical affairs.
The lecture at first gave a full explanation of the risks of burning cigarettes that contain many toxic substances such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia, as well as heavy metals such as mercury and lead, with a review of their effects on the human health and environment and how to quit them. Then he introduced the components of cigarettes of all kinds and their manufacture and identified the contents of cigarette smoke which contains a mixture of gases and particles that exceed four thousand different compounds, including at least fifty substances, irritants and carcinogens, in addition to introducing tobacco, nicotine and aromatic substances.
