The photons unit at the Laser Institute for Postgraduate Studies held recently a virtual workshop entitled “Concentrated Solar Technology” chaired by head of the branch of engineering and industrial applications, Assist. Prof. Dr. Tahrir Safaa Mansour and where the session rapporteur was the director of the photon unit, Lecturer Dr. Hana Sami Bashir.

The workshop was delivered by the engineer Ali Adel Hussein from the Directorate General of Electric Power Production at the ministry of electricity who clarified the multiple use of solar energy via the concentrated solar power (CSP) or the photovoltaic system (PV) and how to convert light into electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. The lecturer also addressed the wide spread of CSP for the sake of compensating for the shortage of electricity in the country in addition to other renewable energy sources that are characterized with high capacity, efficiency, thermal storage for use all day along with simple maintenance and their positive effects for the environment in reducing CO2 emissions caused by fossil fuel power plants.
