Two lecturers from the college of science at the University of Baghdad carried out extensive studies in contribution with professors from Al-Nahrain University and an Iraqi physician doctor on the “Association between ABO blood groups and susceptibility to COVID-19: profile of age and gender in Iraqi patients” and “Evaluating of the association between ABO blood groups and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Iraqi patients” published in Springer German multinational publishing company of e-books and peer-reviewed journals.

These two studies are the first of its kind in Iraq aimed to determine the relationship between the severity of infection with Coronavirus and blood group from one hand as well as the relationship between this pandemic with age or sex from the other hand, in line with a growing body of evidence that showed the important role played by blood type in the risk of infection according to recent research published in European countries on patients of different races. The researchers examined 1014 cases of Iraqi patients (male and female) of COVID-19 as well as 901 cases of blood donors infected with this disease by examining the RNA.
