As part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between academic institutions and government bodies concerned with sustainable development, the College of Law at the University of Baghdad, represented by its Dean, Prof.Dr. Ali Hadi Atiya, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the National Initiative for Energy Support and Emission Reduction, chaired by the Technical Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment.
This memorandum was signed in accordance with the cooperation mechanism guidelines issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research with ministries and non-ministerial entities (Instruction No. 160 of 2009), with the aim of supporting initiatives related to energy, water, and emission reduction, and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The memorandum seeks to support awareness efforts for rationalizing the consumption of energy and water and adopting sustainable practices in the use of natural resources through effective coordination between members and coordinators of the National Initiative, thereby contributing to the implementation of relevant national policy objectives.
The agreement outlines several areas of cooperation between the two parties, including the exchange of expertise, legal collaboration, organizing joint legal seminars and workshops on energy sustainability and environmental protection, supporting legal research projects submitted by the college in the field of environmental law, cooperating in drafting laws and regulations relevant to the work of the National Initiative, and providing specialized legal advice in areas of national and international law related to energy and the environment.
This cooperation represents a significant step toward enhancing the role of the College of Law in supporting major national initiatives and activating the contribution of academic and legal expertise in advancing sustainable development goals in Iraq.
This activity contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals, namely: Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy,
Goal 15: Life on Land, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
