The College of Media at the University of Baghdad has launched a short film competition featuring the participation of students from the departments of Journalism, Radio and Television, and Public Relations. The initiative supports the upcoming conference “Baghdad—Arab Capital of Tourism 2025,” organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in cooperation with the National Committee for Social Awareness and Guidance under the Council of Ministers.
This initiative was launched under the guidance of the college dean, Professor Dr. Ammar Tahir Mohammed, who emphasized the importance of empowering students to express their vision of Baghdad’s present and future in tourism through visual media—enhancing the capital’s presence in the Arab cultural memory.
Nine student films competed in the contest, after one entry was excluded for technical reasons. The jury—comprising a panel of academic specialists including Dr. Ahmed Salah Al-Amiri, Dr. Aqeel Tahseen, Professor Haidar Shadhan, and Professor Mohammed Al-Alwan—used a scientific evaluation form based on detailed criteria including concept, screenplay, visual quality, editing, and pacing.
The results saw three films take top honors: “Baghdad” earned first place, followed by “Taq Kasra” in second, and “Baghdad is My Dance” in third. The organizing committee and supervising faculty commended all the entries.
Dean Dr. Ammar Tahir affirmed that “the college will continue to support student initiatives that foster creativity and engagement with national issues,” adding that “the winning students and all participants will be honored in recognition of their efforts.”
This initiative advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
