The College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences held its second international conference titled “Smart and Sustainable Agriculture and Its Impact on Sustainable Development,” featuring a distinguished group of researchers and academics from Iraq and abroad, alongside experts in agriculture, technology, and environmental sciences.

The conference, hosted at the Hakim Hall, drew a wide audience of representatives from government institutions, the private sector, and international organizations. Participants discussed ways to advance agriculture using modern technologies and achieve food security in the face of environmental and climate challenges.

In his opening speech, Professor Dr. Baha Ibraheem Ansaf, President of the University of Baghdad, underscored the importance of the conference in highlighting recent transformations in the agricultural sector. He stated, “The convening of the second international conference by the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences aligns with the University of Baghdad’s vision to foster an encouraging environment by promoting analytical thinking and employing modern technologies to support the conference’s objectives.”

The university president added, “We are proud that the University of Baghdad serves as a scientific platform bringing together researchers and experts from around the world to discuss smart and sustainable agriculture, which has become an indispensable strategic choice for achieving sustainable development.”

Professor Dr. Amira Mohammed Saleh, Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, emphasized that the conference aims to spotlight the importance of adopting smart agricultural methods that rely on modern technologies and precise data to improve agricultural productivity, minimize resource waste, protect the environment, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This conference is part of the College’s ongoing efforts to enhance scientific research and innovation, reaffirming its leadership role in supporting the transition toward more efficient and sustainable agricultural systems in Iraq and the region.

The conference directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 2, which calls for the eradication of hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture. This is achieved through ensuring sustainable food production systems and implementing specific agricultural practices that increase yields and productivity.
