The President of the University of Baghdad, Prof.Dr. Bahaa Ibraheem Ansaf, inaugurated the Geology Department Museum at the College of Science, accompanied by the Dean of the College, Assist.Prof.Dr. Raed Falah Hassan, his administrative assistant, along with a number of faculty members and students from the department.

During his tour of the museum, the university president praised the presentation style of the exhibits, which featured modern scientific organization under the supervision of the Department Chair, Prof.Dr. Salam Ismail Marhoon, and a group of geology faculty members. The museum houses a distinguished collection of minerals, rocks, and ores classified according to the latest systems, along with a variety of precious stones and rare fossils.

The tour also included a visit to the Geologist’s Workshop, which displays geological samples arranged chronologically. The workshop’s work in preparing rock and mineral slides for study and analysis under the microscope was highlighted. This process assists graduate students in identifying the mineralogical and visual properties of newly discovered rocks and showcasing their fine fossils.

It is worth noting that the Geology Department at the College of Science aims to train a new generation of specialists in geological sciences, based on local and international academic standards, contributing to the scientific and technological development of the country. The department’s work also helps in the discovery of natural resources and achieving a balance between investment and environmental protection.

The museum serves as an essential cultural institution in preserving both tangible and intangible heritage in specific locations, ensuring the continuity of the messages embedded in this heritage and passing them on to current and future generations. Sustainable museums are characterized by energy efficiency, sustainable management, and increasing public awareness of environmental issues. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 15, which focuses on Life on Land, as well as Goal 17, which emphasizes Partnerships for the Goals.
