The Deanery of the College of Science at the University of Baghdad has established a scientific botanical garden for researchers, postgraduate students, and those interested in agricultural specializations, making it the first fully integrated, vibrant scientific environmental unit. The garden, occupying approximately five dunams and located adjacent to the College of Mass Communication in the Jadriya complex in Baghdad, aims to serve as an important reference for postgraduate students, researchers, and those concerned with scientific agricultural affairs. It offers green spaces attached to research areas within the botanical garden for conducting rigorous studies on various medicinal crops essential for sustainable agriculture.
Prof.Dr. Ibraheem Jaber, head of the Plant Research Unit in the Department of Life Sciences, indicated that this project, supported by the Dean of the College, Assist.Prof.Dr. Raed Faleh Hassan, aims to provide a clear and solid model for farmers to adopt such pioneering projects that achieve sustainable agriculture. He explained that the garden contains important plants, including lemongrass and rosemary, which are used in the food industry, cosmetics, and insecticides, and have previously obtained patents.
Additionally, the garden includes plastic houses, perennial plants, trees, palms, fruits, and various types of roses, serving the environment and the educational process entirely for research purposes and studies within graduation projects and others.
This initiative achieves one of the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically the second goal, which calls for ending hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
