The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Baghdad held a workshop titled “The Role of Universities in Reducing Hate Speech”, attended by a distinguished group of professors and researchers specializing in Islamic and social studies. The event was a serious and responsible step toward promoting the values of tolerance and peace.

During the workshop, Professor Dr. Ali Halu Hawas explored the concept of hate speech, its various forms, and the methods through which it spreads, with a particular focus on the role of modern media and social media in exacerbating this phenomenon. Dr. Ali also discussed the underlying causes of hate speech, including religious and ethnic intolerance, social and economic disparities, ignorance, and misinformation.

The activity highlighted the pivotal role universities can play in combating hate speech by developing curricula that promote values of tolerance and dialogue, organizing cultural events and awareness seminars, and encouraging scientific research in the field of hate speech prevention.

The session concluded with several key recommendations, including the enforcement of laws that criminalize incitement to hatred, strengthening the role of civil society organizations in promoting a culture of peace, and encouraging interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
