The Natural History Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad organized a workshop titled “Pollen Diversity and Its Applications in Classification and Evolution.” The session was led by Assist.Lecturer Ali Kamel Wanas and presented by Assist.Lecturer Zainab Ghazi Sadiq.
The workshop aimed to clarify the history of pollen identification, its types, shapes, and methods of handling it in academic classification for research purposes. The main objective of the lecture was to encourage more studies on the pollen of species present in the Iraqi environment and to utilize modern techniques for pollen identification to gain a better understanding of plant families.
In conclusion, the researcher emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to species misidentification and distinguishing between genera for a more accurate classification of plant species. The external morphology of pollen is also crucial for tracing the field of organic palynology, understanding the fossil record, and identifying key morphological characteristics that can be used to track the origin, evolution, and diversity of angiosperms. Additionally, Doyle (2005) provided another perspective on plant evolution based on pollen characteristics. Furthermore, pollen analysis is used in forensic investigations to help solve crimes.
