The College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad organized an awareness workshop delivered by Prof.Dr. Mushtaq Talib, a faculty member at the college. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the significant societal and health risks associated with the spread of drug abuse, particularly among young people, and was attended by several faculty members and staff.

The workshop covered multiple key topics, including the concepts of drugs and substance abuse, measures to reduce their prevalence, and classifications of drug use ranging from experimental and occasional use to chronic and multi-substance abuse. Dr. Talib also highlighted the main factors contributing to drug abuse, such as family disintegration, weak religious and moral values, negative peer influence, and environmental factors.

Additionally, the workshop discussed effective strategies for curbing the spread of drug abuse, addressing its psychological effects, preventive measures, and the role of authorities in enforcing laws and regulations. Emphasis was placed on tightening border control, increasing specialized rehabilitation centers, and strengthening collaboration with relevant institutions to implement preventive and deterrent legislation.

The session concluded with a discussion on therapeutic and preventive approaches, such as promoting beneficial agricultural alternatives to drug crops, the stages of addiction treatment, and rehabilitation processes. The importance of social and professional reintegration was also highlighted as a crucial final step in the recovery process.
