The Educational and Psychological Research Center at the University of Baghdad, in cooperation with the Women’s Rights Department at the Ministry of Justice and the National Security Advisory, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Combating Human Trafficking and Exploitation of Women and Girls”, with the participation of a group of specialists and those interested in legal and social affairs.

The workshop was presented by Eng. Ali Jaber Abed, a lecturer at the Center, who reviewed the most important international conventions related to combating human trafficking, including the Convention against Slavery of 1929 and the Palermo Convention of 2000. The lecturer also addressed the various aspects of this crime, starting from the factors affecting it, through its multiple forms, to the psychological and health conditions suffered by the victims.

The workshop aimed to enhance community awareness of the dangers of human trafficking, with a focus on the legal aspect by shedding light on the Anti-Human Trafficking Law and its various dimensions. The workshop also aimed to familiarize participants with the methods of social and legal protection for victims and mechanisms to reduce the spread of this crime.

At the end of the workshop, the lecturer recommended the importance of intensifying national efforts to confront this phenomenon, through the development of comprehensive strategic plans that combine legal legislation and psychosocial support programs for victims. He also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between government agencies and civil society organizations to raise community awareness of the seriousness of human trafficking and its negative effects on women and girls in particular.

This workshop is part of a series of events organized by the Educational and Psychological Research Center with the aim of supporting national efforts to combat this serious crime and build a safer and more just society.
