The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a workshop titled “Methods of Decontamination in the Microbiology Laboratory”, presented by Prof.Dr. Maha Adel, with the participation of several faculty members from the college.

The workshop aimed to introduce the correct and appropriate methods for hand and surface disinfection and the treatment of biological and non-biological contaminants within microbiology laboratories. The focus was on techniques that prevent and minimize the risk of infection transmission within laboratory settings.

The event covered various disinfection and sterilization methods, including: proper techniques for sanitizing laboratory benches, floors, and equipment used in cultivating pathogenic microorganisms. Suitable sterilization methods for metal, glass, and plastic instruments, as well as single-use and reusable tools, such as syringes, scalpels, and contaminated endoscopes, ensuring minimal risk of infection.

At the conclusion of the workshop, several key recommendations were emphasized, including: washing hands properly for at least 20 seconds and using germicidal disinfectants such as alcohol. Separating waste using color-coded bags according to waste type (general, paper, medical, or sharp objects).Handling biological contaminants (such as blood and other bodily fluids) with caution, ensuring rapid sterilization using an autoclave or incineration. Using hot air ovens for sterilizing glass and metal instruments, adhering to specific sterilization timings, and properly packaging sterilized tools to maintain dryness and prevent contamination.
