The Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Baghdad held its quarterly scientific symposium titled The Political and Security Dimensions of Poverty, attended by numerous faculty members and staff of the center. Assist.Lecturer Duaa Monem Yassin, a researcher in the Department of Public Policy, presented her academic paper, “The Impact of Poverty on Political Stability.”

The study delved into poverty as a critical challenge influencing societal structures and political systems. Poverty’s impact is multifaceted—spanning economic, social, and political dimensions—and gives rise to new forms of state-society relations. The objective of this study was to analyze how poverty affects political stability and to examine the correlations between poverty, social tensions, the rise of protest movements, and armed conflicts.

In her research, the author put forth several key recommendations. Addressing the connection between poverty and political instability, she argued, requires comprehensive, multi-layered strategies. These include fostering sustainable economic development, promoting social justice, reducing inequalities, strengthening good governance, combating corruption, encouraging national dialogue (dialogue among political entities), enhancing public services and infrastructure, and fosterting international cooperation and developmental aid.

At the conclusion of the symposium, Dr. Asaad Tarish, Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, presented the researcher with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of her significant efforts in preparing this valuable research.
