The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Women, University of Baghdad, held a scientific workshop titled “What is the Low-Carbohydrate Diet,” presented by Assist.Lecturer Shahd Haitham Sheet from the Individual Sports Department.
The workshop explained the concept of the low-carbohydrate diet, which relies on reducing the intake of carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, grains, and sugars, while focusing on the consumption of proteins and healthy fats. The goal is to lower blood sugar levels and stimulate the body to burn fat as its primary energy source instead of carbohydrates. This process leads the body to convert fat into ketones, which are used as an alternative fuel, known as ketosis.
The lecture classified various types of low-carbohydrate diets, including the Keto Diet, Atkins Diet, Moderate Low-Carbohydrate Diet, Paleo Diet, and Mediterranean Low-Carbohydrate Diet. It also provided some tips for those wishing to follow a low-carbohydrate diet in a healthy and safe manner, such as wisely choosing carbohydrate sources, increasing healthy fat intake, consuming adequate amounts of protein, paying attention to fiber intake, drinking sufficient water, continuous health monitoring, diversifying meals, exercising, and taking dietary supplements when necessary.
