The College of Science at the University of Baghdad held a symposium titled “The Seismic Monitoring Project at the University of Baghdad: Challenges, Realities, and Aspirations,” attended by the Assistant President for Scientific Affairs, Prof.Dr.Suhail Najm Abdullah.
The event addressed the concept of earthquakes, a natural phenomenon that causes a sudden and rapid shaking of the ground due to the movement of underground rock layers. It was explained that there are two types of earthquakes: the first being natural earthquakes, and the second, induced or artificial earthquakes, which result from human activities such as oil extraction and dam construction in certain regions. It also presented a project outlining the installation of seismic monitoring stations in areas with significant oil activity, using the Al-Rifai area (University of Sumer) as a case study for project implementation.
It is noteworthy that the project spanned four years, from 2014 to 2017, and was implemented in areas with high seismic activity, such as Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and other northern regions.
