The International Community Research Department at the Women’s Studies Center at the University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Center for Psychological and Educational Research, organized a Symposium titled “The Implications of Electronic Blackmail on Women and Ways of Societal and International Protection”. The event was attended by the President of the University of Baghdad, Prof.Dr. Bahaa Ibraheem Ansaf, along with several members of parliament, as well as a group of professors and researchers.

The activity aimed to shed light on electronic extortion and its various forms, as it constitutes a new crime in Iraqi society with negative repercussions on Iraqi women socially, psychologically, and in other aspects. The increase in cases of extortion is attributed to the misuse of social media platforms, in addition to the lack of awareness among some young men and women and the absence of parental supervision.

The Symposium included a presentation by Dr. Adnan Al-Juhaishi, a member of parliament, entitled “Addressing Electronic Extortion and Combating the Drug Phenomenon.” He clarified that electronic extortion is nothing but a crime that encompasses various offenses, including drug abuse, theft, and others carried out via social media platforms. These platforms have become sites for promoting prohibited substances, making it difficult to reach their distributors. Al-Juhaishi emphasized the necessity of addressing these issues scientifically, and highlighted the importance of discussing them in Iraqi universities due to their significant impact on Iraqi youth.
