The presidency of the University of Baghdad held a great celebration for winning the first place in the latest issue of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities for January 2022 through a competition with other Iraqi public and private universities by getting the (1857) position globally according to the indicators obtained during this month. The ceremony witnessed the presence of the university’s rector Prof. Dr. Munir Hamid al-Saadi and his assistants for administrative and scientific affairs, deans of faculties, directors of research and service, director for institutes for postgraduate studies, a number of students, professors and staff, where interesting artistic and cultural events were held that won the admiration of the audience who expressed a great joy and honor for achieving the first place in Iraq so that our university is representing a model of excellence, success and a beacon for scientists, professors and scholars who were credited with obtaining such advanced status in international rankings.

Colorful balloons were released and planes were also flew over the University of Baghdad to celebrate this ceremony. The dean of the institute of genetic engineering and bio-technologies for postgraduate studies, Assist. Prof. Dr. Saif Dawood al-Ahmar, has participated in this event and praised the great efforts and the unlimited support provided by the rector and his esteemed assistants, for their great keenness to achieve the best ranking among Iraqi universities as well as Arab universities in the region as a whole. It is noteworthy that the January 2022 edition of Webometrics showed an increase in the number of Iraqi universities and faculties that have entered this world university ranking, compared to the January 2021 edition in which (79) Iraqi public and private universities have competed in, also the Mustansiriyah University won the second place followed by the University of Babylon in third place. The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab which is a research group belonging to (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain and it is issued every six months based on the most updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world, namely visibility (50%), transparency (or openness) (10%) and excellence (or scholar) (40%).
