Assist. Prof. Dr. Emad Alwan Hussein, a faculty member from the department of Arabic language at the college of Islamic sciences has authored a research paper on a book entitled “Sibawayh and modern linguistics”, authored by the English orientalist Michael J. Carter, that was published by the Journal of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences, No. 4, Vol. 68.

In this study, he sought to conduct linguistic and systematic approaches, between Sibawayh’s methods of language consideration, the questioning of its internal and external data, with the modern linguistic approaches and the principles of contemporary analysis, followed by well-known linguists such as Ferdinand de Saussure, Bloomfield and André Martini, thereby attempting to explore the linguistic practice in human societies. The research took a historical descriptive linguistic approach as well as a contemporary comparative analytical path in an attempt to study the concepts and terminology in the Book of Sibawayh at the theoretical and applied and to objectively analyzing them according to structural linguistics and modern distributionalism theory.
