The college of dentistry at the University of Baghdad held a virtual symposium on (The types of drugs and their negative effects on the health of individuals) presented by the faculty member at the Basic Sciences Branch, the Prof. Dr. Maha Adel Mahmoud, via the Google Meet service. The lecturer highlighted in detail different types of drugs, causes of addiction and its impact on health, as well as the economic and social consequences on the whole community and the most effective methods of treatment and prevention. Then Dr. Maha Adel defined addiction as a state of mind or a biopsychosocial disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences that lead to a state of inability to stay away from drugs since they contain chemicals or plant substances that affect the physical and psychological health of people and lead to the feeling of partial awareness, inactivity and auditory or visual hallucinations. It is noteworthy that the addict feels an urgent desire to use a certain type of substances in an attempt to seek false pleasure or to avoid pain, so addiction is a double-edged weapon often used illegally.
