The department of earth sciences, in collaboration with the continuing education unit at the college of science, held recently a specialized scientific lecture on “Identifying some areas in Iraq with suitable wind energy production” in the presence of a number of students, researchers and those concerned with energy and remote sensing. The aim of the lecture was to identify some areas in Iraq that have some specifications that qualify them to be used in generating electricity, by exploiting wind energy based on previous studies conducted by the faculty members at the department, as well as field work that is constantly being carried out to identify some areas that may be considered as air resources (air pockets) used for generating clean and environmentally friendly electricity.
The lecture was given by Dr. Hassan Katuf Jasim who tried to highlight the interests of most developed countries in the present to produce clean & environmentally friendly electricity and to shed light on the negatives of power generation using the process of burning oil derivatives by traditional and expensive means and causing many environmental problems, as well as the need for establishing giant power plants and to extend power transmission networks to remote areas. He added that many countries therefore resort to exploiting alternative sources of energy generation, namely wind, solar or hydroelectric power so that not to harm any organisms.
