The institute of genetic engineering and biotechnologies for post graduate studies at the University of Baghdad has organized a training online workshop entitled “Cystic Fibrosis (CF)” with the participation of a number of researchers and specialists. The participants discussed the nature of this inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.
The researchers confirmed that children should inherit from both parents one copy of this gene in order to become ill, therefore there is a need to conduct tests on newborn infants to find out if there are some symptoms that may indicate the existence of this case, adding that the people with cystic fibrosis show high percentages of salinity in the race compared to normal rates, so it is recommended to conduct two successive examinations to confirm the diagnosis. The participants also recommended the use of modern molecular diagnostic methods for examining the polymerization chain reaction in order to identify mutations, lung function tests and the use of chest X-rays and computerized tomography (CT) scan. Finally, the workshop recommended conducting epidemiological and survey molecular studies in Iraq.
