The college of pharmacy at the University of Baghdad has organized recently an electronic workshop entitled “Applications of Biotechnology in Medicinal Plants” delivered by Prof. Dr. Inas Jawad Kazim from the medical drugs and plants branch via Zoom platform. The lecturer discussed this set of techniques used to maintain or grow plant cells, tissues or organs under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition and it is widely known as micropropagation method used to produce clones of a plant.
The main aim of this workshop was to provide a detailed explanation of the most important techniques used to grow plant tissues, compared to other traditional methods, including the production of completely identical samples of flowers and fruits that possess desirable qualities, as well as how to produce mature plants quickly, even without seeds or pollinators. Dr. Inas Jawad asserted the possibility of growing whole plants completely from their cells which have already been genetically modified, thus reducing the chances of transmitting diseases or pests as in the case of Orchids and Nepenthes.
