Assist. Prof. Dr. Haidar Zuhair Ali, a faculty member from the department of biology at the college of science has submitted a patent entitled “Molecular diagnosis of cutaneous Leishmania with PCR-RFLP” in conjunction with the Assist. Lecturer Duha Muhannad Abdul Abbas from the department of medical laboratory technologies, the college of medical laboratories at Al-Esraa University College.
This study aimed to adopt a modern molecular technology that ensures the interaction of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by the restriction fragment polymorphism (RFLP) in order to accurately determine the gender and type of the cutaneous Leishmania for an Iraqi isolate at the type level, as it is present endemically in Iraq for four types, two types of (L. tropica & L. major) and other two types of (L. donovani & L. infantum). The findings, that are the first in Iraq, asserted that these two isolates belonged to the Leishmania Tropica, having (GG/CC) called restriction site, adding that this technique reduces time and cost in other molecular tests based on a number of primers.
