Assist. Prof. Dr. Wiam Ahmed al-Amili, a professor from the institute of genetic engineering and biotechnology for postgraduate studies at the University of Baghdad has participated recently in the proceeding of an innovation conference and exhibition held at the college of agricultural engineering sciences and sponsored by the Iraqi center of innovation and creativity with her patent entitled (Using a mixture of frankincense oil and measles virus vaccine to treat breast cancer).

Dr. Wiam al-Amili indicated through this study that modern methods of treating cancer have turned to the most effective phases targeted towards cancer cells without affecting other healthy cells. She stated that one of the shortcomings of the current treatments is their effect on both cancerous cells and healthy cells together, so she tried to make use virotherapy and biotechnology to convert viruses into therapeutic agents by reprogramming viruses to treat diseases with Omani frankincense oil as an experimental therapy to induce a programmed death of local and global human breast cancer cell line (AMJ13 and MCF7, respectively). The patent proved the possibility of its application as a treatment for cancer cases, especially the resistance to traditional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and others. This method is characterized with ensuring safety by avoiding cellular destruction of non-cancerous cells, combating the resistance of cancer cells, as well as high anti-tumor effect against conventional treatments. The patent indicated that in the case of resistance of cancer cells, it is preferable to be wary of the useless use of traditional cancer treatments that may weaken the patient’s health and instead trying to use synergistic therapies.
