The department of chemistry, in collaboration with the continuing education unit at the college of science has organized a virtual scientific symposium entitled “Plastic residues in Iraq and how to reduce” with the participation of a number of students, professors and specialists in environment. The symposium was presented by Dr. Shurooq Badri with the aim to address the topic of environmental pollution in Iraq which is one of the most serious environmental problems at the moment caused by plastic residues that threatens human and wildlife.

The symposium which was transmitted through Google Meet service where Dr. Shurooq Badri reviewed the initiatives and state procedures applied in other countries for energy conversion to reduce the proportion of plastic production, in an effort to ease the pressure on the ecosystem which faces other challenges such as acid rain, agricultural pesticides and chemical fertilizers, indicating that the solution is to produce energy by converting plastic waste into fuel; in addition to restoring perishable natural resources such as resin and rare minerals.
