The University of Baghdad won the first place locally and the 755th place globally in SCIMAGO Institutions Rankings 2021 that measures areas such as: research output, international collaboration, normalized impact and publication rate of worldwide research institutions. Twenty-two Iraqi universities and colleges have competed in this ranking and the second place was gained locally by Al-Mustaqbal University College in Babylon and the 757th place globally, while the University of Mosul gained the third place locally and the 770th globally based on three main criteria: scientific research (50%), innovations (30%) and societal impact (20%). It is noteworthy that three Iraqi universities have entered for the first time this year in this ranking: (Northern Technical University, University of Kirkuk and Al-Muthanna University).
