Prof. Dr. Amer Shaker Khudhair, Assist. Lecturer Sally Adnan Abdul Moneim and the student Inas Hadi Abd from the center for urban and regional planning for postgraduate studies at the University of Baghdad have participated in the 4th International Conference on Construction Engineering and Environment in Turkey sponsored by the University of Technology in cooperation with Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) with a joint research entitled “The Traditional City”.
This research dealt with the constraints suffered by Al-Kadhimiyah city which suffers from the deterioration of the urban image due to urban development and the lack of determinants governing the urban picture as an attempt to build a distinctive urban image of its center in a way that achieves a visual pleasure, urban image and the physical, social and psychological comfort of the recipient to interact with.
The researchers found that the characteristics of the compact city (high density, mixed use, easy access, proximity, public transports) all affect directly the composition of the urban image through complexity, diversity of housing options and urban activities at Al-Kadhimiyah as a result of its impact on (identity, meaning and structure) so it is very significant to rehabilitate the area around the holy shrine in accordance with the urban context of the whole city.
