The University of Baghdad has formally adopted March 2, 1908 as its official founding date, following a resolution passed during the institution’s sixteenth (extraordinary) council session and ratified by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This milestone underscores the historical depth and academic continuity of Iraq’s oldest university.
The decision traces back to the establishment of the College of Law on March 2, 1908, regarded as the nucleus of higher education in Iraq. This date now replaces the previously recognized founding year, serving as a documented anchor for the university’s enduring academic roots.
Under the resolution, March 2 will be enshrined as the university’s official day, integrated into its emblem, formal communications, website, and digital platforms. It will also mark the annual commencement ceremonies, reinforcing institutional identity and preserving academic heritage.
President Professor Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Al-Zughaybi emphasized that this move is not merely a revision of the founding date but a scholarly and legal affirmation of Baghdad University’s legacy. He described it as a consolidation of more than a century of higher education in Iraq, positioning the university as the institutional extension of the nation’s earliest academic foundations. The decision strengthens its national and international standing while safeguarding its history for future generations.
