The College of Excellence at the University of Baghdad convened a specialized symposium titled “Human Development in Iraq: Between Statistical Measurement and Intellectual Perspective”, bringing together senior academics and national experts under the representation of Prof. Dr. Suhail Najm Abdullah, Assistant President for Scientific Affairs.
The symposium dissected Iraq’s human development trajectory through dual lenses—quantitative indicators and intellectual frameworks—while confronting systemic challenges and crisis dynamics. Contributions included a national overview by Dr. Mahdi Mohsen Al-Alak (UNFPA), an evidence-based review by Dr. Maha Abdul Karim Al-Rawi (Ministry of Planning), and a crisis-impact analysis by Dr. Wafa Al-Mahdawi (Al-Mustansiriya University). Collectively, these papers underscored the necessity of harmonizing statistical rigor with conceptual insight to strengthen national and international reporting.
Recommendations emphasized institutional coordination for updated datasets, adoption of adaptive response policies, and integration of intellectual paradigms with empirical outcomes. The symposium thus positioned academic discourse as a driver of resilience and reform in Iraq’s development agenda.
This initiative advances Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
