The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office, organized the “Baghdad: Arab Tourism Capital 2025” conference under the slogan “Baghdad Shines as the Capital of Arab Tourism,” held at the University of Baghdad.
The conference was attended by Minister of Culture Dr. Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Professor Dr. Adnan Al-Jamili, Prime Minister’s Advisor Dr. Hussein Alawi, several members of the Parliamentary Education Committee, University of Baghdad President Professor Dr. Bahaa Ibraheem Ansaf, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions and cultural attachés from Arab and foreign embassies, alongside numerous university presidents, academics, and students.
The event featured a documentary film showcasing the rich history and civilization of Iraq, along with folkloric performances that highlighted the diversity of Iraqi costumes and heritage across different eras. Additionally, a panel discussion was held with the Minister of Culture to address the current state of tourism in Iraq, key tourist landmarks, and development plans aimed at transforming Baghdad into a global hub for education and tourism.
It is noteworthy that Baghdad was selected as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025 in recognition of its illustrious history and cultural significance, as well as the government’s efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote security and stability. The Iraqi government intends to implement a series of major tourism projects in Baghdad, including the restoration of historic sites, the development of tourist facilities, and the organization of cultural and artistic events throughout the year, with the goal of establishing Baghdad as a distinguished tourist destination in the region.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 17, which calls for partnerships to achieve development objectives, particularly through academic institutions supporting activities that contribute to sustainable development.
