The center for women’s studies at the University of Baghdad held a scientific conference entitled “Launch of the national observatory for monitoring the worst social violence in Iraq” with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, in the presence of the official spokesman of the department of media and public relations Prof. Dr. Saad Maan, in coincidence with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the 16 Day Campaign Against Violence Against Women. The director of the center, Assist. Prof. Dr. Athraa Ismail Zaidan, delivered a speech at the opening the conference in which she announced that this conference seeks to combat violence against women and provided a brief overview of the plan to inaugurate a national observatory for monitoring the worst types of gender-based violence in Iraq, recalling this observatory system would last for years to support the government and non-governmental agencies concerned with gender-based violence. Also it seeks to strengthen the knowledge of decision makers in alignment with signing international conventions on civil and political rights, the rights of the child and others related to sex-based discrimination.
