The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad has published a research paper titled “Evaluation of Apically Extruded Debris, Uninstrumented Surface Areas, and Crack Formation in Teeth Following Root Canal Preparation Using ProTaper Next, ProTaper Ultimate, and R-Motion File Systems” in the Journal of Endodontics(USA).

The study was conducted by Assist.Prof.Dr. Ahmed Hameed Ali, Head of the Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Master’s student Haider Abbas from the College of Dentistry, University of Baghdad, and Professor Francesco Mannocci from King’s College London (KCL), UK. The Journal of Endodontics is an official publication of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and ranks sixth among the top ten dental journals worldwide.

The study aimed to evaluate and compare the amount of apically extruded debris, uninstrumented root canal wall areas, and dentinal crack formation resulting from root canal preparation using different file systems. The research involved laboratory experiments on extracted teeth, utilizing advanced computer software to measure the quantity of extruded debris and unprepared wall surfaces. Additionally, the formation of dentinal cracks during root canal preparation was analyzed. The study relied on three-dimensional imaging techniquesto conduct indirect measurements without causing damage to the teeth.
