The University of Baghdad achieved a new scientific and environmental accomplishment by ranking 215th globally out of 2,016 universities participating in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for sustainable universities for 2026, reflecting the advancement of its performance and its expanding presence in international rankings concerned with sustainability and environmental protection.
This year’s edition of the ranking saw the participation of 2,016 universities from various countries around the world, compared to 1,745 universities last year, an increase of 271 universities, reflecting the growing global competition and universities’ increasing focus on applying sustainability standards within campuses.
The UI GreenMetric ranking is based on a set of indicators that measure the extent of universities’ commitment to sustainable practices, including infrastructure and campus environment, energy and climate change, waste and water management, sustainable transportation, as well as education and scientific research related to environmental and sustainability issues.
This achievement crowns the efforts of the University of Baghdad in establishing the concepts of sustainable development, developing a green university environment, and strengthening sound environmental practices across its constituent bodies, supporting its academic standing and keeping pace with the internationally adopted standards in the field of university sustainability.
