The President of the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Al-Zughaibi, took part in an expanded hearing session held by the Parliamentary Committee on Higher Education in the Al-Shabibi Hall at the Council of Representatives, to discuss the proposed Private Higher Education Law and to hear the views of relevant parties prior to proceeding with its legislative process.
The session, chaired by Dr. Adel Al-Rikabi, the eldest member presiding, and attended by committee members, brought together the presidents of government and private universities and colleges, the advisor to the Prime Minister for Education Affairs, and representatives of a number of unions and other relevant bodies.
The discussions addressed ways to develop the provisions of the proposed law in order to enhance the quality and academic rigor of education. These included defining the powers of the University Council and the Board of Trustees, establishing standards for buildings and infrastructure in line with quality and academic accreditation requirements, as well as examining administrative and financial autonomy and the geographic distribution of educational institutions.
The participation of the President of the University of Baghdad reflects the University’s contribution to academic discussions concerning the development of legislation governing higher education, in a manner that safeguards the rights of students and faculty members and elevates educational outcomes in Iraq.
This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal Four, which calls for quality education, as well as Goal Seventeen, concerning partnerships for achieving the goals.
