Prof. Dr. Zainab Ziyad Ismail, a professor from the department of environmental engineering at the University of Baghdad has won recently the award for the best outstanding Iraqi research in 2020 granted by the Network of Iraqi Scientists Abroad (NISA) for her research entitled (Desalination of actual wetland saline water associated with bio-treatment of real sewage and bioenergy production in microbial desalination cell) published in the Separation and Purification Technology Journal issued by Elsevier Ltd.

It is noteworthy that this research paper is part of a doctoral thesis submitted by the researcher Havan Hassan at the department of environmental engineering, under the supervision of Dr. Zainab Ziyad. The research included a new design for the implementation and operation of an integrated system of a microbial desalination cell for water treatment at Al-Kut city in eastern Iraq by desalinating the salty water at Ad-Dalamj marsh as well as for producing clean electrical energy simultaneously in one cell depending on the effectiveness of bacteria actually present in the system.
