His Excellency Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, honored two researchers from the University of Baghdad, Ms. Israa Sa’eed Assi and Mr. Furqad Ali Latif, winners of the Climate Research Award focusing on its impact on security, stability, and sustainability in Iraq.

During the occasion, Al-Aboudi emphasized the importance of aligning scientific research pathways with the requirements of sustainable development, encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions. He highlighted that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is deeply committed to enhancing university contributions towards achieving the highest level of response to the United Nations’ global development goals. This commitment has enabled our academic institutions to competitively rank positively in the Times Higher Education Sustainable Development Rankings, placing Iraq globally at the seventh position.

Al-Aboudi added that higher education and scientific research institutions possess insights and solutions articulated by experts, professors, and graduate students through rigorous scientific research to address pressing challenges, particularly those related to environmental and climate variables. He noted that the Ministry adopts a specific policy and qualitative interest in scientific research by honoring researchers with financial rewards, letters of appreciation, and incentives to publish in international journals affiliated with Nature and Science Journals and TOP Journals in the Shanghai Ranking. Simultaneously, he highlighted that the Arab Scientific Research Councils Union will soon inaugurate its headquarters in Baghdad.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research awarded five million dinars and letters of thank to ten winning researchers from Baghdad, Southern Technical, Thi Qar, Qadisiyah, Kufa, Wasit, Karbala, Hamdaniya, and Diyala universities. He reiterated the commitment to enhance scientific publication opportunities and expand the scope of specialized research linked to providing scientific interventions that contribute to sustainable solutions for climate change issues.
